<description>On the Remarkable Business Show, I speak with people, brands, and companies doing something different and challenging the status quo. The guests are authorities in their chosen areas.
I ask them about what they are doing, how they've succeeded and they tell their story, in their own words. We look at lessons they have learned and how their knowledge and experience can help you.
It's accessible, authentic and useful. I promise not to waste your valuable time.
There will also be discussion and chat on technology, travel, design, coffee, productivity, and wellness... to name a few topics!

<description>Episode 10 of The Remarkable Business Show
Welcome to a special episode - number 10! I could not have done this without Howard and Harry at engine7. If you need audio production, you need to speak to Howard :) Thank you brother!
 Check them out here. (https://www.engine7.co.uk)
In this episode I talk about the fact that time can really fly... and being mindful of how you spend your time.
Not letting good get in the way of great.
I also think about how brands and businesses which tell stories are the ones that succeed and also a little on B Corporations. I love brands that do something really well. McNair Shirts, Plum and Ashby and Bluffworks for example.
What brands do you like?
At the end of the show I cover something that's caught my eye, so much I bought one, and that's an Awair.
It's a device that monitors indoor air and I cannot recommend them enough. Make sure you listen to why it works so well.
Buy Awair on Amazon here (https://amzn.to/2Qd6D5C:)
Special guest - Andrew Meo
I’m delighted to welcome Andrew to the show. New Zealander Andrew Meo one of the founding partners of Milan based espresso machine manufacturer, Rocket Espresso (https://rocket-espresso.com).
Self employed since the age of 21, Andrew has developed a number of businesses, predominately within both the hospitality and coffee industries before purchasing a failing Italian espresso machine manufacturing business in 2007 and establishing Rocket Espresso.
Driven by both the technical competence of the machine, combined with machine aesthetic, Rocket Espresso is now a leading espresso machine manufacturer.
When not at his desk, Andrew will undoubtably be riding his bike preparing for forth coming races (or having a coffee and a slice of cake).
What we covered
what Rocket Espresso do and how they started
their range (consumer and commercial) and the market for these type of machines
learning about how to brew good coffee at home and the categories of users
how the market has changed
the design aesthetic for Rocket
design and functionaility
the Rocket brand experience
the connection with cycling and how this started with a special machine and a collaboration with Rapha
Rocket's ambassador programme
the Rocket culture
Italian working culture
avoiding hierarchy and everyone getting their hands dirty
the biggest challenges over the past few years and overcoming these
how to manage change
Andrew's biggest challenge in 2019
new products and the importance of a good grinder
the importance of setting your business apart from the competition
going into business for the wrong reason
the importance of competition
brands Andrew likes and good business models
Quote of the Episode:
This episode’s quote comes from Hunter S Thompson and refers to what I was talking about at the beginning of the show.
That is making sure you don’t stay on autopilot, you become mindful of what you are doing and what you are PLANNING on doing.
Life is short and most people look back and think of the things they wish they did… estimate how many years you have left, even months and days and you soon realise we are not immortal… (not wanting to be morbid, it's reality!).
Hunter summed it up nicely…
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
What's caught my eye?
Awair
Awair tracks invisible fine dust and chemicals in your air and gives you personalised recommendations to help you stay safe and healthy. Get one for your home and office. Highly recommended.

<description>Episode 9 of The Remarkable Business Show
Thanks for tuning in for this episode and a special welcome if you are a first-time listener.
It's been over a year since the last episode was published - profuse apologies! The last fifteen months have been full of work and travel - 12 countries in 2018 and over 25 flights! I also spent a good proportion of the winter in Asia back in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.
This episode is dedicated a very special friend who has recently passed away - Richard Wanderman (https://richardsnotes.org). Richard was one of life's good guys and I miss him. He was wise, kind and generous. Even though we lived thousands of miles apart, we always kept in touch and I looked forward to our FaceTime calls.
Richard was supportive and encouraging, especially when I set up Hull Digital, the tech and digital community in the city here in East Yorkshire. HD has just turned ten years old and I wrote a post here about it (https://mossy.co.uk/2019/a-long-time-ago-in-a-cafe-not-far-away/), and importantly what I learned over the years.
It's good to be back and I have a very special guest for this episode. A good friend and someone who I've known for over a decade!
Special guest - Steve Leighton
I’m super-pleased to welcome an old friend onto the show - Steve Leighton. If you are into coffee, you have probably heard of him, listened to him or watched him online.
Steve is the founder of Hasbean coffee (https://www.hasbean.co.uk) and also the co-owner of Drop Coffee and 3FE.
We actually recorded this conversation back in 2017 and so I picked up the phone a few weeks and apologised for the slight delay, ahem.
Luckily Steve was very understanding so please bear with us if there are a few things that are slightly out of date. I wanted to make sure I put this out as there is so much wonderful information about coffee and an insight into how Steve has created a remarkable business.
What we covered
the very first iPhone and joining Twitter back in the day
visiting Hull and how we met

Hasbean operations

Quote of the Episode:
"To make every minute count you’ve got to make every future minute count also. And that means living a life today that won’t leave you burnt out and broke in 5 or 10 years.
Shawn Blanc
Shawn and I spoke back in 2017 and recorded a great conversation which like Steve’s I have not done anything with! I’m going try and get this sorted out for a future episode.
In the meantime, have a look at what Shawn does over on

<description>Episode 8 of The Remarkable Business Show
Thanks for tuning in for this episode and a special welcome if you are a first-time listener.
In this episode I talk about my experience of working remotely as a "digital nomad" in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. It is a wonderful city with so much going for it: amazing weather, lovely people, a big digital nomad community, cycling, incredibly quick internet and a perfect location for seeing other parts of the world. (You'd be right in thinking that I enjoyed it!).
I've also just launched a little side project - https://stelv.io - check it out and get 10% off using the code REMARKABLE. If you are outside the UK and would like to order something, then just get in touch and we can get you sorted out.
Special guest on the show
This episode's guest is the award-winning journalist and founder of Trint, Jeff Kofman.
Jeff knows the world of video content. He's an Emmy winning veteran network television news and war correspondent with more than three decades of experience reporting from around the world.
He's covered many of the biggest stories of our time including the Iraq war, the Arab Spring, hurricane Katrina, the Gulf oil spill and the Chile mine rescue.
Trint is a productivity tool that revolutionizes the handling of audio and video content, offering intuitive editing and sharing of automated transcripts. Trint has developed a text editor that does the heavy lifting for you, the user.
YOU’LL LEARN
why he created Trint
the importance of UX
the importance of testing
Jeff's advice for starting out in business
how he experienced and reported on some of the world's most famous events
Quote of the Episode:
This episode's quote is from Mark Twain and fits nicely with the travel that I've been doing lately.

<description>Episode 7 of The Remarkable Business Show
Thanks for tuning in for this episode and a special welcome if you are a first-time listener.
In this episode I talk about the opportunity for any business to have something remarkable which they can be known for. Also, why it doesn’t have to be high tech and not to ignore the cracks…
It’s also vital that every person in a business understands how they fit in and why they play an important part.
Life is way too short to be unhappy and unfilled with what you do.
This is why this episode's guest, Sean McCabe and his new book, Overlap, is a perfect fit if you are thinking of starting your own business. (You must be ready to pay the price though).
It doesn’t mean quitting your day job and hoping for the best - Sean explains what is possible.
We had a great conversation covering a wide range of topics.
YOU’LL LEARN
— how making something he loved turned into a hugely successful hand lettering course bringing in a six figure sum in three days
— how community plays a big part in Sean’s business and why you should have one too
— the difference between audience and community
— the number one source for new business
— Sean’s biggest challenges and how he overcame them
— the power of delegation and what never to delegate
— how he transitioned from being a creative to teaching people business and earning an income from it
— the combination of authority and authenticity
— the big takeaway from the last 12 months - “the new zero”
— the importance of professionalism, as a service providers and also being the client as well
— how you must think about the mindset of the client and what they really need
— essential communication and what not to assume
— establishing a role in the relationship of client and service provider
— how to understand sending and receiving of messages
— how to present a proposal effectively
— his one piece of advice for someone starting a business
— avoiding the scarcity mindset with a new business
— how to combine your day job AND your side project: Overlap
— how Overlap book became the book people needed to read
— how the book will help people get unstuck…
— Sean’s favourite new app
Quote of the Episode:
This episodes quote is from Arianna Huffington.
"Failure is not the opposite of success; it's part of success."
Why? Because you are always going to be ahead of someone if you try something. Ok, you don’t start out wanting to fail… but most people don’t even get that far.

<p>This episodes quote is from Arianna Huffington.</p>

<p><em>&quot;Failure is not the opposite of success; it&#39;s part of success.&quot;</em></p>

<p>Why? Because you are always going to be ahead of someone if you try something. Ok, you don’t start out wanting to fail… but most people don’t even get that far.</p>

<description>Episode 6 of The Remarkable Business Show
Welcome!
Thanks for tuning in for this episode and a special welcome if you are a first-time listener.
In this episode I talk about how to start the day in the right way and a book you'll find super-useful - Hal Elrod's Miracle Morning.
The show's guest is the wonderful Brendan Dawes.
Bren is an artist and designer and he explores the interaction of objects people technology and arts using form and code and he's got a kind of eclectic mix of digital and analogue materials he uses for some of these projects.
He's also the author of two books on Interaction Design. His work is featured in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art and has been honoured in awards including Fast Company innovation by design, Information is Beautiful and D&amp;amp;AD.
His client list pretty impressive. It includes Air BNB, Google Twitter, Cancer Research UK and Mail Chimp and that's just a few of them.
YOU'LL LEARN:
-- what Bren does and all about his latest installation, Fermata
-- why he loves Tokyo
-- how he worked with Air BnB and The Happiness Machine
-- the essential thing NOT to do at SXSW
-- all about his task chitty system
-- how he works effectively at home
-- his tools of the trade on the Mac
-- the backup trifecta
-- why he hates Slack
-- the privilege of being able to work on something you love
-- why working with good people is essential
-- why he loves a small stationary business in London and his other favourite things

<description>Episode 4 of The Remarkable Business Show and it's a special one!
As you may have guessed from the intro, I'm a keen cyclist, in fact a MAMIL. You know what that is don't you? A middle age man in lycra.
So when I had the opportunity to interview one of THE biggest names in cycling, I was rather excited. Ok, REALLY excited!
Today's guest is Jens Voigt: a legend.
He wore the yellow jersey of the Tour de France twice. His career achievements include winning the Critérium International a record-tying 5 times and a number of one-week stage races, as well as two Tour de France stage victories. In September 2014, he set a new hour record. The record now held by a certain Sir Wiggo.
Jens is a remarkable person and he gives us a fascinating insight into the world of cycling, business, brands and technology.
YOU'LL LEARN:
-- the importance of bikes in developing countries and how it transforms people's lives
-- Shut Up Legs! - his brand and how it came about
-- has cycling become too focused on business and money?
-- how technology has changed in cycling
-- Trek's joke with a new test frame...
-- e-bikes and a little secret from Jens...
-- are there electric motors in the peloton?
-- the total lack of innocence with mechanical doping
-- the major changes we will see in bikes over the next few years and the one thing Jens thinks will disappear
-- his predictions for the Giro and the Tour (we spoke at the beginning of May)

Quote of the show
Tim Ferriss is one clever guy and someone who I admire and have followed for many years. I spent a few days with him back in 2008 at the very first Do Lectures where he was speaking.
“Never automate something that can be eliminated, and never delegate something that can be automated or streamlined. Otherwise, you waste someone else’s time instead of your own, which now wastes your hard-earned cash.”

I talk with Keir Whitaker who has been making a living with web technologies since 2000 and has held a variety of positions for both agencies and corporate organisations. He's also worked as a freelance web developer, technical consultant, and event curator.
Since 2012 he has been working at Shopify helping grow the Partner Program and building a community around designers. We talk about the culture, what the partner programme involves as well as what he is focused on for 2017.
We talk about how communication has changed online and the good things about Slack and the not so good! We also discuss the events he organises with Shopify including a very successful one in Bristol plus the fact that you don't need to be a global brand. We also cover Shopify being a commerce platform and not just online.
Keir also co-hosts a podcast called The Back To Front Show which we chat about.
We also go into two of his favourite books plus the software that has impressed him recently.
Finally, we have the quote of the episode from Paul Graham and a few topics I mentioned in The Bulletin newsletter I send out each month.

It represented a significant change in architectural thinking, allowing TWA to polish its image by means of a building, clearly distinguishing it from other airlines. Saarinen's striking design got much publicity throughout its operational life until closure in 2001. It was regarded an emblem of the jet-age, yet it never really suited its operational requirements. It also investigates how the building remained an icon of jet-propelled aviation while never properly serving its purpose for just that industry.

<description>Episode 2 of The Remarkable Business Show! I talk with Dusty Davidson who is the CEO and Co-Founder of Flywheel.
Flywheel is a company based over in Nebraska, Omaha who do the very best hosting for Wordpress. Dusty talks about what makes them special plus the importance of a great workplace and culture. We also discuss the joys of home AI plus his favourite cooking gadget!
Dusty Davidson is a technology entrepreneur residing in lovely Omaha, Nebraska and we enjoyed a great conversation talking about what makes Flywheel tick, their workplace and people plus plans for the future.
He's best known for my work with Silicon Prairie News &amp;amp; Big Omaha and is currently the co-founder and CEO of a WordPress hosting company called Flywheel.
He's super passionate about startups (particularly those in the Silicon Prairie) and he loves his food and wine!
Dusty grew up in Iowa and attended Iowa State University (yes, where they invented the computer). Afterwards he spent some time traveling around Europe before coming back to reality and settling into a couple of software development jobs.
The first was a small company with a great culture, and the second was at a large company with a shitty culture. The combination of those experiences drove him (with the help of his partner Kevin Zink) to start his first company – Brightmix. Essentially they wanted to create a place where they would want to go work everyday, and surround themselves with people who might want something similar.
He often describes Brightmix as a software consulting company whose prime directive was to be a product company, not a time-for-money company. After a couple failed attempts they finally got their chance with Tripleseat, a web-based software for restaurants to manage private events. In September of 2010, they raised some money and went “all in” on Tripleseat.
Along the way, they got connected with Jeff Slobotski, and teamed up to start Silicon Prairie News. Dusty describes it as “wanting to find more people like us.” That is – in Omaha how do you surround yourself with people that care about innovation, high growth startups, cutting-edge technology, great design and creativity?
Over the years Silicon Prairie News itself has spawned a number of things, including Big Omaha, Big Kansas City and the Silicon Prairie Awards. It has very much been alongside, if not been a driving force of what he describes as an entrepreneurial renaissance in the Midwest over the past 6 years. SPN to this day serves as the #1 voice for entrepreneurs and startups in the middle of the country, and in January 2015 it was acquired by the AIM Institute.
Fast forward to today, where he has the privilege of working alongside some good friends to build Flywheel, which he believes to be the best WordPress hosting solution on the market – and certainly the most beautiful. They’re early on but growing quickly, and are working hard each and every day to make the lives of web designers easier.
I recently spent some time in Italy and I reflect on the benefits of travel and also the ability to work when traveling, thank you internet!

<p>He&#39;s super passionate about startups (particularly those in the Silicon Prairie) and he loves his food and wine!</p>

<p>Dusty grew up in Iowa and attended Iowa State University (yes, where they invented the computer). Afterwards he spent some time traveling around Europe before coming back to reality and settling into a couple of software development jobs.</p>

<p>The first was a small company with a great culture, and the second was at a large company with a shitty culture. The combination of those experiences drove him (with the help of his partner Kevin Zink) to start his first company – Brightmix. Essentially they wanted to create a place where they would want to go work everyday, and surround themselves with people who might want something similar.</p>

<p>He often describes Brightmix as a software consulting company whose prime directive was to be a product company, not a time-for-money company. After a couple failed attempts they finally got their chance with Tripleseat, a web-based software for restaurants to manage private events. In September of 2010, they raised some money and went “all in” on Tripleseat.</p>

<p>Along the way, they got connected with Jeff Slobotski, and teamed up to start Silicon Prairie News. Dusty describes it as “wanting to find more people like us.” That is – in Omaha how do you surround yourself with people that care about innovation, high growth startups, cutting-edge technology, great design and creativity?</p>

<p>Over the years Silicon Prairie News itself has spawned a number of things, including Big Omaha, Big Kansas City and the Silicon Prairie Awards. It has very much been alongside, if not been a driving force of what he describes as an entrepreneurial renaissance in the Midwest over the past 6 years. SPN to this day serves as the #1 voice for entrepreneurs and startups in the middle of the country, and in January 2015 it was acquired by the AIM Institute.</p>

<p>Fast forward to today, where he has the privilege of working alongside some good friends to build Flywheel, which he believes to be the best WordPress hosting solution on the market – and certainly the most beautiful. They’re early on but growing quickly, and are working hard each and every day to make the lives of web designers easier.</p>

<p>I recently spent some time in Italy and I reflect on the benefits of travel and also the ability to work when traveling, thank you internet!</p>
